Railroad Reality Week

—Workin' on the railroad—

 

Adult Requirements

Any person over 18 who has the physical capability to get into a locomotive cab by themselves, has a valid drivers license and a sense of adventure can join the program.

The Nevada Northern Railway is an operating 19th century railroad with all the dirt and grime as well as the clean crew for the trains. We ask that you bring with you clothes that you can get dirty, work boots, and clothes that will be clean for the crews on the train. We will also going to a natural hot spring, so bring swim gear. You will also need at least one long sleeve cotton shirt to be worn in the cab of a locomotive. Bring sunscreen as we will be out in the sun.

Equipment provided
The Nevada Northern will provide hard hats, safety glasses, and gloves. Please note: If you wear glasses, please bring a pair of safety glasses or googles that will fit over your glasses. You will also receive the Nevada Northern Handbook of Operating Rules and a binder with information on the surrounding area as well as history of the railroad, mining, and track repair information.

Altitude
Ely, Nevada is at 6500 feet above sea level. It is a dry climate. Be prepared for these conditions. We provide water at all locations.

Teen Requirements

Any teens, male or female, ages 14-18 who have the physical capability to get into a locomotive cab by themselves, who has (or has the potential for) a valid driver's license and a sense of adventure can join the program.

Requirements are a complete application, currently enrolled in school, school transcript, a 2.75 GPA and medical history. Due to Ely's remoteness, a parent or guardian must accompany the attendee and stay in Ely during the week. During the program day, the parent or guardian may participate in the suggested activties and is welcome to all evening activities. Suggested Activities
